Resilience  A Gift Book to Enrich the Soul and Restore the Spirit

Life can throw us the most unexpected of curve balls. These can come in so many different forms – a reversal of fortune, ill-health, a death of a loved one or pet, or a child leaving home, the loss of a job, divorce, floods, fire or drought.  So many of life’s events test our mettle; they challenge our resilience.  A simple reminder that we are not alone and that others have survived setbacks often provides comfort. The words of another can push back the clouds for us momentarily until we are strong enough to do it for ourselves giving us a glimmer of sunshine in the midst of a dark night of the soul.

The very fact that over the decades so many eminent and ordinary people, from saints to sinners, spiritual leaders and business magnates, celebrities and poets, have felt compelled to share their insights about maintaining resilience is testimony to the fact that we are not alone.

My Gratitude Journal

One of the earliest advocates of a daily gratitude practice was Dutch philosopher Rabbi Baruch Spinoza. In the seventeenth century, he suggested that each day for a month, we ask ourselves the following three questions:

Who or what inspired me today?

What brought me happiness today?

What brought me comfort or deep peace today?”

Neuroscience tells us expressing gratitude can change our neural pathways diffusing anxiety, depression, grief, self-pity and self-centeredness. Gratitude increases our feelings of well-being and prompting mindful awareness of being safe in the present moment and at the same time reminding us that we belong to a greater whole, and of connection to others, as well as to the universe.
